Q Social Problems Discussion Description This is a discussion forum. We will be using this feature weekly until the end of the course. All discussion forum posts require two parts. You must complete an initial post as well as a reply post in which you respond to at least one of your classmates. • Initial posts are due by 11:59 pm on Wednesdays • Reply posts are due by 11:59 pm on Sundays I will provide feedback to your post within two weeks from the close date. Topic This week will be all about prioritizing health and healthcare inequalities. More than ever, this past year in the pandemic has highlighted social problems and health-related disparities. In this discussion, your task is to identify a social problem related to health or healthcare in your city of choice and do some research to find out who is working to address the problem. Instructions General guidelines: • Address each part of the discussion prompt. • Format your post by using a numbered list for each item in the prompt for initial posts. • Add your initial post to this forum by Wednesday at 11:59 pm (to do so, just click the "reply" button below). • Add your reply post to this forum by Sunday at 11:59 pm. • Your initial and reply posts should each be about 3-5 sentences long. • If the discussion asks for media (i.e., images or videos), please use the embed tool-- do not attach any files to your posts. If you need help, view these helpful tips on how to embed images to Canvas discussions. • Be kind and respectful to others. • Use full sentences. • Use language that supports others. • Please do not post content (images or language) that contains nudity, violent, or oppressive/ discriminatory content. Prompt for initial posts: 1. Identify a social problem related to health or healthcare in your chosen city. 2. Introduce a person or group (activists, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, etc.) that is working to address a problem related to health or healthcare in your chosen city. Is this claimsmaker an insider or an outsider? Insiders work within or near sources of power to more easily effect social change and outsiders operate externally to sources of power and must work hard to maintain the attention of others. 3. Explain some of the strategies this person/ group takes to address an issue related to health or healthcare in your chosen city. 4. Use the tools on the text box to post an image that represents the person/ group working to address the issue. This can be an image of an individual, collection of people, logo of an organization, or building where the work takes place. Ideas for reply posts (please do at least one of the following): 1. Say what you found interesting and explain why. 2. Share if you learned something new. 3. Share if you have something in common. 4. Ask follow up questions. Grading This assignment is graded as credit/ no credit depending on if you follow all of the instructions or not. Your initial and reply posts are each worth half of the total points for this assignment. If you miss the due date for the initial post, you can still turn in a reply post in order to get half points. If you turn in your initial post on time but no reply post, you will get half points. Remember, you will submit a total of 15 weekly reflections in this course and your 10 best scores will count toward your final grade. Your 5 lowest discussion scores will be dropped. Even if you score full credit on all 15 discussions, I will still drop 5 of your scores. See the grading rubric below for a better sense of how you will be assessed: 4 0 Initial post Each part of the discussion prompt is addressed; replies are correctly formatted; any required media is embedded Post is missing; does not fully address the prompt; lacks required formatting; and/ or includes inappropriate content. Reply post Post includes a substantive and engaged response; sticks to the topic of the forum Post is missing; provides no substantive information; includes inappropriate content. Support Please email me if you have questions or encounter any problems. The Canvas Student Guide provides detailed instructions on discussion forums including how to post a reply. Hospital systems are merging, consolidating, and buying each other, especially in the New York metropolitan region. Healthcare systems are reconfiguring to set new facility norms, spurred by competitiveness for customers and the shift to a service charge paradigm. This requires integration of cost-effective primary care clinics with "target" facilities for individuals with coverage that allows them more options. This is mainly due to the delay in implementation of the Affordable Care Act. This is reflecting in the decision making of the hospitals which have now utilized the services meant for the above reasons.
